Week 3

Class 1 –

Mark, Todd and Alyssa talked about interviewing techniques.

After that we met with our mentors and discussed the progress of our stories. We only had one more week before the first due date and I, along with most of my classmates, had a lot of work left on the first draft of the mainbar.

When Mark and I talked, he helped me set a few goals and gave me advice on how to contact the people I was struggling to find information for.

That night I found information for the jurors on the Christine Lucarell vs. Nationwide case and started contacting them. I kept hitting dead ends over the next couple of days. But finally got the interview I needed to make my story into a workable draft.

Unfortunately at the end of our conversation, he told me he didn’t want me to use his name. I told him I needed to discuss it with my editor and professor. He agreed to give me a day to discuss it with them, and I immediately emailed Alyssa and Mark. Following their advice, I called him back the next day and 45 minutes later had convinced him to let me use his name. He also agreed to answer any questions I might have for him as I continued to write the story.

I also got one other juror to chat with me. From there, writing my story was just a matter of meshing the information from the hundreds of pages of court documents with their interviews.

Class 2 –

We had no formal class on Thursday.
